At Afton Nature School we believe that learning should be child directed and challenging. We are concerned about preschool philosophies that promote the "right way" to do tasks and to use tools. It is our belief that there are as many "right ways" to do a task as there are people. We feel one person's broom, might be another's giraffe galloping across the Serengeti. Whether children are planning a dramatic performance or constructing a zoo out of Duplos, it is the thinking, the discussion, and the teamwork that are critical to their future success. We feel creativity, flexibility and acceptance are critical character traits in our diverse world.
Children must view themselves as successful and capable prior to entering the formal classroom. We foster self-confidence development through practicing self-help skills and authentic activities: putting away cots, carrying dishes to the kitchen, cooking, gardening, caring for classroom pets, etc.
We are commited to providing an extensive collection of books to the children. They are rotated weekly from our collection of children's titles. The children are read to and with many times each day.
Physical fitness is promoted by active outdoor play as well as planned indoor programs, such as music and movement. Children are encouraged to play group games as well as explore and create their own adventures. Our natural playscape is designed to encourage exploration and outdoor learning. We use yoga and relaxation exercises to develop the children's abilities to self-calm and relax.
At Afton you will find a classroom full of interesting natural items as well as high quality wooden toys and tools. The rotation of unique items in the classroom launches projects. The literacy center and other planned activities focus on the development of pre-reading and reading skills, as well as fostering a love of books in the children. Math skills and understanding are strategically facilitated with well designed math experiences. Our extensive dramatic play area promotes creative play as well as collaboration. The construction area is extensive and geared to develop the architects and engineers of the future. The importance of art is apparent from the well stocked art studio located right off the main classrooms. Art skills are taught and children are exposed to the works of master artists. The variety of educational activities meet the needs of each type of learner.
